What is RIDDOR?
RIDDOR puts duties on employers, the self-employed and people in control of work premises (the Responsible Person) to report certain serious workplace accidents, occupational diseases and specified dangerous occurrences (near misses).
Types of reportable incidents
If someone has died or has been injured because of a work-related accident this may have to be reported. A RIDDOR report is required when:
- the accident is work related; and
- it results in an injury of a type which is reportable.
Who should report
Only ‘responsible persons’ including employers, the self-employed and people in control of work premises should submit reports under RIDDOR. If you are an employee (or representative) or a member of the public wishing to report an incident about which you have concerns, please refer the matter to us as a complaint (details for this can be found on the ‘Health and Safety at Work Complaints’ section of this website)
Making a report
All RIDDOR reports are made to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) who then pass relevant reports to the Local Authority.
