Help against hardship

Council Taxpayers receiving support will receive further relief thanks to additional funding from Central Government. 

Government has provided the Council with £514,957 to help Council Taxpayers during the lockdown as a result of the outbreak of Covid-19. 

Those of working age who are already receiving Council Tax Support will have the amount they have to pay for the financial year 2020-21 reduced by up to £150 – meaning for many of the taxpayers entitled to the relief, they will have nothing to pay for this year.

The Council will be applying the relief to accounts automatically.  If you qualify for the relief, you do not need to do anything - the amount will be calculated, and added to your bill automatically.

In some cases, taxpayers who made payments this year, will be entitled to a refund.  If you are one of these people, your payments will be automatically returned to your bank account.  This however, will only be possible if there is a bank account linked to your Council Tax account, or where a Housing Benefit payment has been previously paid into your bank account. 

If there is not a bank account linked to your Council Tax account, the Council will not contact you to ask for your bank account details over the telephone or by text message.  So, if anyone does contact you asking for these, the Council’s advice is to be very cautious and not to provide them.

Where there is no bank account linked to your Council Tax account or where a payment of Housing Benefit has not been paid previously into your account, the Council will be unable to refund your money straight away.  

Please phone the team on 01529 308266 to arrange a refund.  For security purposes the officer will need check some details with you from your claim for Council Tax Support, to ensure the refund is issued to the correct person.
