Tenants, who buy a flat or maisonette from the Council, are known as leaseholders and will buy the property on a long lease, usually for 125 years.
The structure of the building and the land it stands on belongs to the Council but leaseholders will be responsible for maintaining the fixtures and fittings in their own flat or maisonette. Leaseholders will also have to pay towards the cost of managing, maintaining and improving the building and communal areas. This payment is called the service charge.
The information contained within this section is a summary of some of the terms detailed in the lease. Further information is detailed in the Leaseholder Handbook.
