Building design services
The Property Services department seeks to encourage good practice to ensure the construction, upkeep and running of the houses involves the minimum demand for non-renewable resources.
The current focus of investment is centred around kitchens and bathrooms as well as doors and windows. The need to improve insulation and heating is also a priority.
Roles and key activities of property services/design services:
Planned and cyclical maintenance - a programme of term works to ensure that the Council’s own stock is maintained in a good condition and that heating and electrical systems are serviced.
Decent homes standard investment - catch up work to bring all the Council’s stock to the Government’s Decent Home Standard.
Housing stock condition survey and database - An ongoing survey of the housing stock will provide all the information required for Decent Homes and for providing SAP ratings. The data base will be used to formulate future capital programmes.
Energy efficiency - promoting awareness of the ways in which residents can reduce energy consumption. To carry out energy efficiency measures to upgrade the thermal values of the housing stock. If you are a Council Tenant and would like a free pack of low energy light bulbs contact:

Sustainability - Property services are actively trialling new technologies in order to evaluate if sustainable systems can effectively reduce tenants running costs, improve heating systems and to reduce the impact of carbon emissions.

Estate improvements - Through the capital works programme estate improvements are undertaken to provide parking, safe access, security and lighting.
Tenants improvement scheme - The Council operate a scheme by which, tenants can apply to carry out various works to the property. An application form needs to be completed and submitted to Design services for comments and approval if appropriate.
Radon - Design Services provide advice on Radon in partnership with the NRPB (National Radiological Protection Board). Remedial works have been carried out to various properties affected by Radon.
