The role of a housing officer

Housing officers have a wide range of tasks, including:

  • Rent collection
  • Rent arrears control (including evictions)
  • Sign-ups of tenancies
  • Mutual exchanges
  • Abandoned properties
  • Property inspections
  • Engaging with and consulting with tenants
  • Completing references for tenants
  • Changes to tenancies, e.g. on death of tenant
  • Enforcing tenancy breaches e.g. condition of property
  • Estate inspections
  • Office-based duty role answering queries
  • Home visits to tenants
  • Completion of forms with tenants
  • Preparation of legal documents, including tenancy agreements and deeds
  • Assessing tenant vulnerability and making referrals for support
  • Advice about tenancies
  • Advice about Council services

The role involves both enforcement and support.
