Candidate and Agent Briefings

Becoming a Candidate

Anyone considering standing as a candidate or an agent is strongly advised to read guidance and information provided by the Electoral Commission.

In addition to meeting at least one qualification, you must ensure that you are not disqualified from standing. Please refer to the Electoral Commission’s guidance on qualifications and disqualifications.

Nomination packs for a specific ward can be emailed from 10 February.

Please note that legislation has been passed to reduce the number of subscribers required for principal area elections from ten to two. 

Delivery of nomination papers

Candidates wishing to stand for election must submit nomination papers to the Returning Officer at one of the following locations:

  • Thursday 16 March to Tuesday 4 April (between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday) – Meeting Room 1, North Kesteven District Council Offices, Kesteven Street, Sleaford NG34 7EF
  • Thursday 23 and Friday 24 March ONLY (between 10am and 4pm) - NKDC Waste and Street Scene Depot, Scoley Court, Metheringham LN4 3BS
  • Thursday 30 and Friday 31 March ONLY (between 10am and 4pm) – Info Links Office, ONE NK, Moor Lane, North Hykeham LN6 9AX

 To make an appointment to deliver nomination papers, please either:

  • email the Corporate and Civic Support team, giving your name, contact details, number of nomination papers to be submitted and for which parish or parish/town ward; or 
  • phone either 01529 308208 or 01529 308209 during office hours only.

Priority will be given to those who have made an appointment.  If you do not, you may have to wait to be seen.

Delivery of the nomination paper, home address form and consent to nomination MUST be by hand and can be by the candidate or their representative. Whilst the other necessary documents may be sent by post it is desirable for all documentation to be delivered with the nomination paper.

Anyone wishing to have an informal check of nomination papers prior to formal submission can email them to nominations@n-kesteven.gov.uk. Nominations papers will still have to be hand delivered to one of the appropriate designated locations for formal submission.

You can also make an appointment for an informal check by emailing the Corporate and Civic Support Team or by calling 01529 308208 or 01529 308209, giving your name, contact details, number of nomination papers to be pre-checked and for which district ward.   If everything is correct, formal submission of papers can be made at that time.

Campaigning 

As with national elections, you and your campaigners should also have regard to the Electoral Commission's Code of Conduct for Campaigners Code of Conduct for Campaigners, which outlines what is, and what is not, acceptable behaviour at polling stations and in the community during the lead up to polling day.
