The role of a housing officer
Housing officers have a wide range of tasks, including:
- Rent collection
- Rent arrears control (including evictions)
- Sign-ups of tenancies
- Mutual exchanges
- Abandoned properties
- Property inspections
- Engaging with and consulting with tenants
- Completing references for tenants
- Changes to tenancies, e.g. on death of tenant
- Enforcing tenancy breaches e.g. condition of property
- Estate inspections
- Office-based duty role answering queries
- Home visits to tenants
- Completion of forms with tenants
- Preparation of legal documents, including tenancy agreements and deeds
- Assessing tenant vulnerability and making referrals for support
- Advice about tenancies
- Advice about Council services
The role involves both enforcement and support.
