Electrical safety

What you can do

It is important that you make sure to use the electrical circuits and outlets within your property safely. Some of the ways you can do this are:

  • Don’t overload outlets
  • Check your plug sockets for damage. Anything cracked, broken or burned should not be used, and should be reported to Ian Williams so it may be repaired.
  • Don’t do any DIY relating to the electrical circuits in your home, such as replacing plug sockets, fuses in your consumer unit, changing settings on your fuse box etc. If you have any issues, please contact us.

What does North Kesteven District Council do?

North Kesteven District Council undertakes a periodic electrical inspection of the condition of the electrical system within your home on a 5 yearly basis. This is called an Electrical Safety Test or an Electric Installation Condition Report.

This test is carried out by our contractor, Sureserve. It inspects a proportion of your electrical outlets and your fuse box within your council property. It can often take a couple of hours to complete the test. Following the test, you will be provided with a copy of the Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for your records, and we will also receive a copy.

If your electrical system is safe, there is nothing further to be done until your next inspection. If, however, works are identified you will be made aware, and arrangements will be made to carry out repairs as required.

I have been told I need a rewire, what happens next?

Our contractor, Sureserve, will notify us of the failed test and an Officer will contact you to arrange to discuss what is required (the plan of works) and the time frame for this.

A rewire may also need an Asbestos Refurbishment and Demolition Survey before starting work. If this is the case, you will be made aware, and a contractor will carry out this work.

Liaison Officers will be in touch to ensure that you are aware of what is required and to ensure any support you may require is taken into consideration when planning the work.

Our contractor will carry out the work required and when finished the work will be inspected by NKDC officers to ensure it meets our standards.
