Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 Fragility of Freedom competition

Competition

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, North Kesteven District Council is honoured to announce an educational art competition for ages 11 to 16 year-olds.

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is an international day that takes place on the 27 January annually. The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) advocate remembrance and reflection to the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions of people who lost their lives due to the discrimination inflicted upon them by the Nazi group.

We would like to encourage young people to explore what Fragility of Freedom means to them through a self-portrait submission for display at Hub Sleaford over Holocaust Memorial Day.

Theme

Reflections of identity: A self-portrait showcase

North Kesteven District Council invites students to express their unique identities and ‘freedoms’ through creating a self-portrait, encouraging them to include aspects of their life such as interests, emotions, and aspirations. We encourage entries to be as creative and unique as possible and completed in any medium or multi-media.

Exhibition

Shortlisted entries will be showcased in a collated space at the Hub, Sleaford on Saturday 27 January at 1pm. A range of shortlisted entries will be showcased in a collated space at the Hub, Sleaford from Saturday 27 January through to Saturday 3 Feb where visitors will be able to nominate their favourites. We also hope to showcase them through a Facebook vote alongside the creative showcase. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 7 February with prizes awarded to winning entries.

The exhibition aims to provide a platform for students to see their work collated and celebrate their freedom to be creative. The competition also encourages reflection on the fragility of freedom and how individual freedom was affected by the events of the Holocaust and during more recent genocides. The exhibition will be running for a week finishing on Saturday 3 February.

The competition and exhibition will feature on the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s interactive activity map.
