The Student Council was established back in 2010 and meets three times a year at North Kesteven District Council (NKDC), Sleaford. We invite up to four students from all of the secondary schools in the district to every meeting. Starting in 2025, students attending local colleges will also be invited, provided they are 18 years old or younger and that they live in North Kesteven.
The broad aims of the NK Student Council are:
- To give young people a voice in shaping services and organisational priorities within the district.
- To give young people a direct link to decision-makers.
- To establish an infrastructure for engaging young people in local democracy.
- For young people to learn more about their community, local and county council and have a real impact on issues that affect them and their peers.
There are usually three sessions per meeting and these are either led by different NKDC teams seeking student input, or by outside speakers covering topics the students have requested to learn about. The wide variety of subjects covered in the last year have been:
- Apprenticeships at NKDC
- Safer Streets
- Flourishing Communities
- Lincolnshire Reservoir Project
- Relationships and how we communicate
- Creating well-designed places to live
- Climate Action
- Mindfulness
