Thousands of people are better informed about the opportunities and activities on their doorstep this summer as a result of the Council’s presence at the Heckington Show.
Being on site in a prominent location over the two days was a triumph on every level – not least by winning the award for Best Trade Stand, in part because of its vibrancy, breadth of interest and the visual appeal of the presence.
From a walk-through nature trail to identify environment harms from littering and fly-tipping, to encouraging consideration of butterflies, moths and bees through thoughtful planting and actions, a sand play to promote the summertime Sleaford beach up to August 23; promotion of local walking, cycling and days out activity and an energising cycle challenge, there was much to see, do and learn.
More broadly there were opportunities to tune in to the Sleaford cinema plans, take a broader view on the recent £4m-plus UKSPF investment projects District-wide and to talk through best practice on food waste recycling and understand the shape of future councils.
In making his award, trade stand judge and president of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society, which organises the Lincolnshire Show, Robin Hancox said he felt the stand had a clear thematic flow with its main focus on enjoying and caring for the outdoors; a breadth of interest for a wide variety of showgoers; was engaging and inviting for all ages; supported people in better understanding important aspects of change; and was colourful and attractive with its many trees and flowers.
He also said that the engagement and enthusiasm of the on-the-ground team and the positivity expressed by visitors to the stand was equally energising.
Exploring North Kesteven’s stunning countryside was a key theme as the Council’s focus curated everything you can do in the District to get out and about and enjoy the great outdoors over the summer, which is brought together under the Heart of Lincs banner www.heartoflincs.com This included supporting vibrant wildlife, travelling sustainably and enjoying the District responsibly.
And looking ahead, visitors were invited to engage on priorities for walking and cycle infrastructure locally, on the potential for a cinema in Sleaford and in understanding the Government’s arrangement for council reorganisation.
Council Leader Cllr Richard Wright said, “Being right at the heart of Heckington Show is such a great opportunity for us to meet with our residents, businesses and visitors to the area, to engage, listen and respond and to showcase ways in which the Council is supporting its communities.
“This year our theme related to the many small ways through which we can all make a big difference to life locally, and to have been recognised through this award on the success of that profile, and also through various compliments from attendees is really encouraging as we carry on in delivering positive impacts daily.”
Within the main ring at the 158th edition of England’s largest village show, the Council-sponsored Victor and Victrix Ludorum cycling challenges ware highlight of the ever-popular and competitive cycle races, won by Lewis Day and Tilly Gurney.
Contributing significantly to the look, feel and visual appeal of the marquee were a range pf plants and trees loaned by you to Manor Farm Shops in Leasingham and Dyson Farming, helping to bring the colour, nature and vibrancy to its displays, and to Butterfly Conversation Trust, Hill Holt Wood, Better Gym and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust for sharing their passion to connect people with nature, and local arts practitioners Rooted Arts.
Next year’s Heckington Show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25, 2027. We’ll be there and look forward to seeing you there too.
