Extended licensing hours have been made available as part of VE Day celebrations on May 8

Extended licensing hours have been announced for May 8 in celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The Government action gives an automatic extension for pubs and bars licensed to sell alcohol up to 11pm, to stay open for two hours longer through to 1am on May 9.

This follows on from similar extensions at times of national celebration, including the 2024 Euro Finals, the Coronation of King Charles III and Platinum Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II.

In making the announcement, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, the whole country should come together to remember the incredible sacrifices made by the wartime generation and to celebrate the peace and freedom they secured for us all. Keeping our pubs open for longer will give people the opportunity to join in celebrations and raise a glass to all of the men and women who served their country, both overseas and at home.”

It doesn’t extend hours for premises already licensed beyond 11pm, doesn’t extend hours in which entertainment can be provided and nor does it apply to premises only licensed to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises.

Licensees are advised of a scam targeting holders of Premises Licences in relation to the annual fee due on the anniversary date of the initial licence issue.

North Kesteven District Council will never contact a licence holder to demand direct payment over the phone. It has a process of sending out an invoice four weeks prior to the due date, and even through any follow-up calls payment would never be taken or requested by phone.

Licensees are advised, if they receive a call they believe to be fraudulent, not to make any payments and instead to call the Council’s Licensing Team on 01529 308076 or email: licensing@n-kesteven.gov.uk
