Millennium Green, North Hykeham’s cherished green space, is to get a mile of upgraded walkways in the New Year thanks to North Kesteven District Council works.
Currently unsurfaced, the footpath which circumnavigates the former gravel pit is popular with local walkers and nature enthusiasts, and the scheme will enable better year-round access for a wider range of visitors.
In order to complete the project safely and swiftly, Millennium Green will be closed to the public during the work, which is scheduled to last three weeks from 6 January 2025.
Council Leader and Executive Member for Development, Economy and Culture Councillor Richard Wright said: “We’ve listened to feedback from the people who visit and love Millennium Green, which is why we’re undertaking this project to surface the footpath around the lake. Once completed, it’ll be better for walkers, wheelchair users, cyclists and other visitors, opening up the site to more of our community.
“We know it will be disappointing for regular visitors that we’re having to close Millennium Green while the work takes place, but it means that it can all happen quickly and more cost-effectively, giving the Green back to the public in the shortest possible time.
“Once the path is finished we’ll be inviting the community to join us for a collective walk to celebrate the improved access.”
On Sunday 22 December, in advance of the work starting, there is also a community walk starting from Station Road at 10am, at which Council staff will be present to help answer any queries about the planned footpath. Christmas jumpers and hats are encouraged.
The new path will be created by Lindum using crushed granite, a hard-wearing material that provides a consistent surface with minimal environmental impact.
The scheme is also a good example of the positive impact that can be made by Section 106 funding arrangements – where developers contribute funding to deliver infrastructure in the local area required to support new development. This project was funded by contributions under Section 106 from developments in the locality.
Millennium Green will be closed to the public for three weeks from 6 January 2025, including the associated parking area on Station Road which will be used to store materials.
