Christmas Message from Chairman of North Kesteven District Council, Councillor Andrew Hagues
Christmas is a time for coming together and for both giving and receiving, whether that is through the exchange of gifts and good wishes, generosity of spirit or in actions carried out with good grace and goodwill.
Such thoughtful concern for our neighbours, those we live, work and move alongside in our daily lives, or for complete strangers is part of what makes us human and characterises life in our District of Flourishing Communities.
The extent of this was evident once more recently as we celebrated the contributions of individuals, groups and businesses that go above and beyond through their voluntary endeavour and community-minded consideration to enrich the lives of people and places. The NK Community Champion Awards represent the mere tip of an enormous metaphoric iceberg of selfless action and it was truly inspiring and humbling to reflect on and recognise the generosity of people who give so much of their time, energy and goodwill to supporting, encouraging and caring for those around them.
It was clear to me that they sacrifice so much in their own lives for the greater good and this Christmas I wish to recall and recognise the many people who will be sacrificing their own festivities and family time, out of care and consideration for others. This includes our emergency services, those working in healthcare, officers of this and every other council and public service organisation, and those working on helplines, in crisis response and in support of the homeless.
So many people are experiencing tough times, difficult decisions and sometimes impossible choices and they should find comfort in the vast network of charities, churches, councils, organisations and ordinary kind people that provide help locally.
I am especially mindful of the work of the Lincolnshire Rural Support Network, which is my chosen charity. Dedicated to supporting the rural community, offering a range of services to assist those in need, including a helpline, counselling, health screening and business support, their commitment to the wellbeing of the rural community is unwavering, even during the holidays.
Just as those working in agriculture and horticulture remain alert to the needs of their livestock and the harvesting of crops for our tables, the LRSN’s helpline is an ever-present source of support and solace. If you or someone you know are in need, it is available on 0800 138 1710. And for those who can afford to, I know they would appreciate every bit of financial support that can be given at this JustGiving page.
Volunteers and staff workers at the LRSN and so very many charities that sustain us all in our daily lives really are the unsung heroes of our communities, and even more so in this season – all selflessly sacrificing their own Christmas to provide continuity of essential services and operations, for the good of us all.
Our thoughts too are with the Armed Forces, at home and abroad, and our specialist intelligence services, protecting our country.
As much as it is a time for celebration, we see how Christmas is a time to appreciate the blessings we have and to extend a helping hand to those in need.
My wish is that we all, in whatever way we can, remember the true spirit of Christmas by spreading kindness, compassion and generosity. Whether through small acts of kindness or larger gestures, every little counts and makes a potentially life-changing difference – something as simple as a smile, a chat or a card to someone who is experiencing loneliness.
This period is also a time of hope, as we look to a new year filled with promise and opportunity. Let us carry forward the lessons we have learned and the bonds we have strengthened and together strive to build communities that thrive on collaboration, compassion and connectivity.
May this Christmas be a time of joy, peace, and togetherness for you, your loved ones and your wider community. May the festive lights illuminate not only our streets but also our hearts, fostering a sense of goodwill that transcends the holiday season.
On behalf of North Kesteven District Council’s Officers and Councillors, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a healthy, prosperous, happy New Year.
Warm regards,
Councillor Andrew Hagues
