Households are reminded of a change to Monday collections, for the upcoming Bank Holiday

Households who have bins collected normally on a Monday in North Kesteven are being reminded of changes to accommodate the late August Bank Holiday.

Customers who would normally have their purple-lidded bins collected on Monday August 26 (and those with brown garden waste bins due to be collected then if subscribed) are asked to put them out instead on the earlier day of Saturday August 24

Please present bins by 6.30am on the day of collection, which ensures that in the event of hot weather the crews can get around before the worst of the heat hits. Each of the Council’s waste crews collect more than 1,000 bins every day!

If you’re ever unsure on what can go in your bins, there’s a range of information at www.n-kesteven.gov.uk/recycling including the Council’s Right Thing Right Bin leaflet and an A-Z of recycling on various items.

Thinking of having a Bank Holiday clear out of your clutter at home? The Council operates a paid-for service to collect your large or "bulky" items such as sofas, armchairs, bed bases, mattresses, fridges or fridge-freezers, washing machines and wardrobes. Find out more at www.n-kesteven.gov.uk/bulkywaste

Make sure you don’t fall foul of fly-tippers if looking to otherwise get rid of items over the Bank Holiday weekend. Rogue waste carriers will be looking for opportunities to take your rubbish for cheap and then dump it somewhere else, pocketing your money while spoiling the environment and putting you at risk of a court fine or other sanctions. Use the Council’s receipt template in the downloads section at www.n-kesteven.gov.uk/flytipping to ensure the carrier you use is legitimate and help to protect yourself should your waste end up fly-tipped.

Any businesses looking to get rid of their waste must also ensure they use a licensed commercial waste carrier and make the proper checks, or similarly risk court action. A drive-by scrap collector who dumped commercial waste he was paid £350 to dispose of properly has been charged £2,300 and told to do 15 days of rehabilitation and 150 hours of unpaid community service work. Tommy-Lee Barras, 29, of Devon Road in Newark pleaded guilty at Lincoln Magistrates Court to three charges relating to fly-tipping after North Kesteven District Council responded to the dumping of material near Leadenham a year ago.
After being traced back to its origins the property owner confirmed it was his. He said a white Ford Transit van – later found to be Barras’ – pulled up at the premises looking for scrap and the driver offered to take the waste away for £350. The business owner admitted he made no checks for a waste carrier’s licence and accepted that he failed in his duty of care to ensure that Barras was a legitimate waste carrier, for which he was fined £400 through a fixed penalty notice. See the full story at www.n-kesteven.gov.uk/council-news
