Helping children to survive their cancer diagnosis is the express intent of new Council Chairman Cllr Lucille Hagues.

Taking office as North Kesteven District Council’s civic head, Cllr Hagues said her nominated charity would be Children With Cancer UK which has a vision to ensure that every child and young person diagnosed with cancer – of which there are around 4,500 in the UK every year – survives their cancer and gets to ring the after-treatment bell.

A long-time resident of Leasingham and Ward Councillor for the Cliff Villages, she will be supported during her time in office by husband and County Councillor Andrew Hagues, himself a recent Chairman of Lincolnshire County Council, and Vice-Charman Cllr Ross Little who is a North Hykeham councillor.

A grandparent who has herself been diagnosed and treated with a type of cancer 20 years ago, Cllr Hagues went on to be involved with trails for new treatments for lymphoma and served for 10 years as a patient representative on the National Cancer Research Institute. As such the charity holds deep personal resonance.

“They fund innovative research projects that aim to determine the causes, find cures and provide care for children with cancer so that one day every child can ring the end of treatment bell. Their vision, which I share, is a world where every one of these children and young people survives their cancer,” said Cllr Hagues.

“I do hope that over the next year you will donate generously to this most worthy cause,” she said, inviting ‘any novel ideas for fundraising’.

In her role, Cllr Hagues is greatly looking forward to getting out into the community, meeting with people and organisations that contribute so much to North Kesteven as a District of Flourishing Communities – and especially so if invited to attend any Platinum Jubilee events.

“It is a great honour and a privilege to be elected to this role and I will do my utmost to diligently represent this wonderful District,” she said at the Annual Council meeting where she was appointed.

“It is my intention to carry out the duties placed upon me with the competence and professionalism required, for the good of both the Council and the communities within North Kesteven.”
