Reduce, Reuse, Recycle waste

Last year 53% of waste collected from households around the District was recycled and composted.  Thanks to the residents of North Kesteven this has increased from 16.1% in 2002/03.

The amount of waste from each household is still continuing to grow and we are fast running out of space to put it in.  We need to reduce the amount of waste we create in the first place as well as reusing what we already have and keep on recycling as much as possible. 

Why is waste a problem?
The biodegradable waste in landfill sites produce a large amount of gas emissions, both methane and carbon dioxide.  Landfill sites are responsible for releasing 25% of the UK methane emissions. Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas 21 more times more damaging than carbon dioxide.  To find out more about the problems click on the link for Landfill on the right hand side.

What can you do?
Use the links on the right hand side and further down this page to find out what you can do to make a difference by reducing, reusing and recycling your waste.  You can also find out what happens to your waste, how it is recycled and what it can be turned into.
