The Service
The following activities are undertaken by the Planning Services unit:
- Processing planning and related types of application including those within the District's 38 conservation areas and including some of the 1,000 listed buildings.
- Street naming and numbering
- Providing pre-application guidance to developers and advice to other customers on all planning related matters
The following additional functions are carried out by Regulatory Services in support of the Councils Strategic Objectives
- Making Tree Preservation Orders (there are now several thousand of these)
- Deciding application for works to tree preservation order and conservation area trees and protected hedgerows.
- Dedication to and maintenance of public open space and providing guidance on the maintenance of trees on Council owned land.
Input to the Council's Strategic Objectives
The Service contributes in varying degrees to all of the Council's strategic objectives, namely, a thriving and prosperous economy; a good quality of life for residents; and a clean, green and safe environment. Specifically the department will contribute pro-actively to the key activities identified in the Council's Priority Development Plans (PDP's) for the following areas:
- Work with partners to deliver affordable housing and endeavour to provide decent homes for vulnerable people
- Provide high quality support to business and promote economic development and tourism
- Promote and maintain clean streets and clean open spaces
- Implement planning policies that support the Council's vision and strategic objectives
- Tackle the causes and impact of anti-social behaviour
