Council Services:

Noise Nuisance

The Environmental Protection Unit at North Kesteven District Council are responsible for investigating complaints of noise nuisance, recommending and enforcing noise standards, and providing advice and guidance on a wide range of noise issues within the district.

Noise is a common source of complaint to the Local Authority. A large part of the teams noise work is Statutory Nuisance investigation covering everything from barking dogs and domestic noise, to activities or equipment on business and industrial sites.

Certain activities have maximum decibel levels associated with them, or levels have been specified in planning or licence conditions. We will carry out investigations to see if these standards have been reached. In some situations there are no specific noise limits: then we have to look at the problem on its own merits. In general terms, we can take further action if the noise is unreasonable and excessive.

A small team of Environmental Health and Technical Officers carry out this work. Work is allocated by complaint type as well as by District, however all Officers are happy to answer general queries.
The Environmental Protection Unit are also consultees on Planning applications.

Where enforcement action is necessary, officers take appropriate action dependent on the seriousness of the breach of the law, guided by our enforcement policy.
