Council Tax Benefit - New Claim

You can claim Council Tax Benefit if:

  • You are on Pension Credit, or
  • you are on Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance, or
  • you are on a low income (this includes people who are self employed)

You cannot get Council Tax Benefit if:

  • you, or your partner between you, have more than £16,000 in savings except if you are over 60 and getting Pension Credit Guarantee Credit

A partner is someone you are married to, or someone you live with as if you are married to them. If you have a partner we need to know about both of your circumstances in a joint claim.

Second Adult Rebate

You can claim Second Adult Rebate if there are other people living in your home who are on a low income.

You can have more than £16,000 in savings and have a high income and still get Second Adult Rebate. This rebate is based on the incomes of other people living in your home.

You cannot claim Second Adult Rebate if you are married or have a partner.

How do I claim?

If you claim for Pension Credit, Income Support or Job Seekers Allowance the Department for Work & Pensions, Jobcentre or Pensions Service will give you a form for you to claim Council Tax Benefit. Fill in the form and send it back to them or directly to us straight away.

If you send the form to them they will send the form to us with proof of your Pension Credit, Jobseekers Allowance, or Income Support.

If you have not claimed income support or job seekers allowance (income based) or Pension Credit you can still claim Council Tax Benefit.

You can claim Council Tax Benefit if you are on a low income. You need to fill in the “Benefit Claim Form”.
